План Лорел Хили сделать карьеру в документальном кино складывается далеко не так удачно, как ей хотелось бы, из-за чего она вынуждена согласиться поработать в Конгрессе в команде брата — сенатора от штата Мэриленд, занимающего пост парламентского организатора фракции демократов. На новом месте девушка сталкивается сразу с двумя серьезными проблемами. Первая касается непреодолимых разногласий между демократами и республиканцами, грозящих привести к прекращению работы правительства. Вторая заключается в том, что ведущие американские политики подверглись нападению мелких инопланетных существ, питающихся мозгами людей. Чтобы узнать истинные цели этих загадочных жучков, Лорел предстоит объединить усилия с эксцентричным конспирологом Густавом Триплеттом и ординатором Рошель Додье. Число подвергшихся заражению конгрессменов и сенаторов продолжает увеличиваться, что вынуждает главную героиню принять экстренные меры по спасению американцев от полоумных политиков.
